Art  group Brownsierra are Pia Gambardella and Paddy Collins. Formed in 1998. Based in London. Both are practicing artists writers and performers. We have become known particularly for our  work with sound and limited edition artist publications. Developing an approach to modify, adapt and transform things that already exist through a process of finding and reusing discarded and disused materials, adapting, often changing, original functions to take on a new life or existence.

A Culture Of Silence

A Culture of Silence was made by a process of cut ups taken from literary sources and also includes a glossary compiled from a variety of text books. It was first published in Noisegate magazine issue 9 and then published as a limited edition artist publication under the same name. Later rendered in letraset and ink as a series of paintings in an exhibition of artist working with text called ‚Total ASBO‘. At he launch of Playing with Words: the Spoken Word in Artistic Practice we performed using recordings of the text played simultaneously on two dictaphones using inching and rewind techniques. For this realisation we have overlaid the recordings made from the text pieces, creating new meanings through the interplay of the spoken texts simultaneously heard.
