These are two recordings made in the ecologically complex and diverse Marrdja mangroves (Daintree National Park). One made in the middle of the night and the other starting at dawn. They were recorded in the exact same spot, at the edge of the mangroves facing an estuary. They are both unedited (aside from fading in and out) single take recordings.

01 | In The Marrdja Mangroves At One In The Morning
A peaceful chorus of insects, crustaceans, mangrove trees/fruit, water, occasional bats and birds, and the very distant drone of the beach a kilometre away fill the nocturnal recording.

02 | Dawn To Morning In The Marrdja Mangroves
Australian Figbirds and Green Orioles dominate the dawn chorus while many other species sing in the background, particularly notable are a pair of Shining Flycatchers and a group of Helmeted Friarbirds. As the light of morning grows, the calls of birds become quieter and sparser, with the only consistent sounds being the quiet insects of the mangroves.

Birds identified in the dawn/morning chorus are: Australasian Figbird (Sphecotheres vieilloti), Green Oriole (Oriolus flavocinctus), Shining Flycatcher (Myiagra alecto), Black Butcherbird (Cracticus quoyi), Orange-footed Scrubfowl (Megapodius reinwardt), Common Cicadabird (Coracina tenuirostris), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus), Superb Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus superbus), Bar-shouldered Dove (Geopelia humeralis), Helmeted Friarbird (Philemon buceroides), Olive-backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis), Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo azurea), Large-billed gerygone (Gerygone magnirostris), Fairy Gerygone (Gerygone palpebrosa), Metallic Starling (Aplonis metallica), Rufous Shrikethrush (Colluricincla megarhyncha), Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Varied Triller (Lalage leucomela), Mistletoebird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum), Spotted Catbird (Ailuroedus melanotis). This list is not complete but it covers the main singers throughout the recording. Included in the download is the bird identification sheet which Kath Shurcliff made for me, that lists which and approximately when each bird calls.

Excerpts:

01
MP3
02
MP3

2 Tracks (68′07″)

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

Recorded at the end of the dry season, in the Daintree National Park, Far North Queensland, Australia. A huge thanks to Jordan Blockey (night) and Kevin Guiney (dawn) for driving me to this location at times when they would normally be asleep, to make these recordings possible. And to Kath Shurcliff from BirdLife Northern Queensland for taking time out of her busy schedule to help me identify the birds of the dawn chorus.

Field Recording Series by Gruenrekorder
Gruenrekorder / Germany / 2014 / GrDl 146 / LC 09488

Reviews

Łukasz Komła | polyphonia.pl
Nowości płytowe z Gruenrekorder
Właśnie ukazały się cztery nowe albumy w wersji cyfrowej w katalogu oficyny Gruenrekorder.
