2022: Gregory B\u00fcttner and Simon Whetham were invited to make a new version of their collaboration project „Place is the Space“ for the new festival betweenEbbandFlow : interstitial spaces to work with outdoor sites, and respond to each other and the place with sound over visual communication. They were given access to a large open-sided hall space at PARKS which houses a concrete ping pong table and is often filled with the sound of the factory opposite. A challenge for them to work with…<\/p>\n

Over 5 days that summer they explored what worked\/was possible and what didn’t\/wasn’t. The final presentation took place over 6 hours on July 2nd 2022 with them rebuilding and reinstalling everything they had done the previous days, then altering, adjusting, moving, adding and then subtracting elements and actions until by 21:00 the space was returned to its original state. The pair recorded these actions and other sonic activity of the site with a view to presenting the project as a composed work at some point in the future.<\/p>\n

After much stalling and false starts the piece is now complete, but then the artists asked themselves and each other the question: what is it not?<\/p>\n

It is a document of the project, but it is not a documentation of the project.
\nIt is a composed work, but it is not a composition.
\nIt is a sounding walk, but it is not a sound walk.
\nIt is a site-responsive installation and performance, but it is neither of these things.<\/p>\n

A sounding walk through a situation that’s already finished and a place that no longer exists (GrDI 232, DL) realisierten sie im Sommer 2022 beim Festival ‚Between Ebb and Flow‘ erneut in Hamburg. Es ist, nach ihrem Daf\u00fcrhalten, und ist auch nicht: Ein Dokument. Eine Komposition. Ein Sound-Walk. Eine Installation. Eine Performance. Ein Update von ‚Place is the Space‘.
\nIn einer offenen Halle, an der Elbe, gegen\u00fcber eine Fabrikanlage, auf einer Mauer steht \u201eBAD“. So oder so ist es doch Sound Art, 5 Tage komprimiert auf 6 Stunden, 6 Stunden verdichtet auf 42 Minuten. Metalloid durch Kanister und gro\u00dfe Beh\u00e4lter als Resonanzk\u00f6rper, durch Hantieren mit Eisen, durch Klopflaute, Vibration und Ventilatorik perkussiv, ja sogar rhythmisch. Dazu murmelig liquid, wie dumpfe Hydrophonie oder leises Rinnen. \u00dcberhaupt dominiert eine leise Low Fidelity als Spielraum f\u00fcr zwei einsame Spieler, die die einsame Stille eher betonen als st\u00f6ren wollen. Ihre scharrenden, kollernden, knisternden, tropfenden Ger\u00e4usche imitieren eher den Wind, erst surrende Automatik sowas wie Arbeit. Menschenwerk quert auf dem Fluss, schallt vom anderen Ufer, per Radio, mit Dopplereffekt, als Pingpong, als ferne Stimmen. Pr\u00e4senter sind ein vages, von einem Ohr zum andern changierendes T\u00f6nen, ein luftiges Blasen, ein zartes Fl\u00f6ten, unbestimmter Mikroklingklang. Als ‚es ist‘ und ‚ist auch nicht‘.
