Mick O\u2019Shea has become known for his experiments in the interstices of visual and sound art. The Spectrosonic series comprises drawings and audio tracks that relate to each other indexically. O\u2019Shea makes an acoustically active surface so that, as he draws, sounds are produced that he can manipulate and layer with sounds generated from other sources. Lines, forms and textures are distributed across the page to create a visual composition, and at the same time, an acoustic composition is formed through the careful control of pulses, pressures and waves. O\u2019Shea maintains that the true \u2018art\u2019 of the Spectrosonic series exists in their making, of which the resultant audio track and painting are simply traces or souvenirs. As an artist, he is interested in finding forms that are \u2018sonogenic\u2019, that is to say, forms that create beautiful sounds.<\/p>\n

Spectrosonic Drawings<\/p>\n

In 2003 he made his first drawing table, with 2 contact mics attached right and left so as he drew a visual line from right to left a sonic line also travelled from right to left. What was created was almost a manifestation of synaesthesia which is a perceptual condition of mixed sensations. The images and sound exist separately though they were created at the same time. They are not edited afterwards and exist as a trace or remnant of the performance. The resulting recording was transferred to vinyl record and this one only copy is presented with the original drawing. It was released by Gruenrekorder in Frankfurt in August 2011.<\/p>\n
