a friend once commented how many of my recordings are from a perspective up close. for me it is this perspective that I return to and find is important, an audible view of a situation – in this case a continuous event – that is not readily audible, or at least is greatly enhanced through amplification from the contact mic surface. for this release movement of water in two forms become the basis of exploration. one active one passive. each revealing some inherent noise, compression, hum and tension of existence.

So far we came across the name Ben Owen as the person behind the Winds Measure Recordings label, but sometimes he records his own music. Here on Gruenrekorder he deals with field recordings. The first four tracks were recorded on the coast of Jacob Riss Park, Far Rockaway, Queens, NY and the last two at the Caroll Street Bridge, Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York. The title ‘Two’ probably refers to these locations. Its hard to tell what exactly he recorded in these locations, but it surely sounds quite fascinating. The microphone comes very close to whatever the events are that are captured here, as think they are events. Winds blowing through a pipe in the ‘Gowanus 2′, maybe rain drops upon contact microphones in ‘Soft Magnetic Se’? Since I don’t know what it is, its hard to guess, but its also were the beauty of the recording lies I think. Beyond the ‘ordinary’ capturing of recordings out there, this is quite a fascinating release of crackles, cuts, hiss, almost electro-acoustic in execution, like a turntable left outside in ‘Atlantic Jetty S-N 1′. Альбом Бена Оуэна называется «Two» не просто так – материал, вошедший на диск, посвящен двух состояниям воды, активному и пассивному. Это, конечно, не дополнение к фундаментальным законам физики о трех агрегатных состояниях воды, это, скорее, попытка зафиксировать при помощи микрофона состояние покоя этой субстанции (например, лужу, на гладкой поверхности которой так красиво отражаются облака) и ее необузданную энергию (см. обложку и любое побережье на этой планете в ненастную погоду). Двойственность проявляется и в звучании альбома. Первая половина «Two» представляет собой нагромождение самых разных звуков – фантазия и слух подсказывают, что для создания подобного саундтрека необходимо поместить микрофон в водонепроницаемую бутылку и бросить в воду недалеко от берега, причем желательно, чтобы в этой полосе прибоя плавало еще множество самых разных вещей, называемых словом «мусор». Плеск воды, раскаты грома доносятся словно издалека, надежно укрываемые ватой спецэффектов, на первый план зачастую выходят как раз звуки сопутствующие – постукивания, шуршания, шорох и треск. Все это к тому же измельчено в гранулы, довольно хаотично перемешанные между собой. При прослушивании диска в наушниках иногда может показаться, что в уши сыпется натуральный песок. Этот же песок ветер бросает в микрофон, который, периодически готовится выйти из строя и начинает сильно искажать и без того непростую мешанину звуков. Вторая часть альбома состоит в целом из тишины – той тишины, которую иногда можно воссоздать (но крайне редко) в обычной городской квартире. Той тишины, которая позволяет услышать циркуляцию воды по многочисленным трубам, или уловить тонкий звон капель, падающих из крана. Оуэн, конечно, не новичок в работе с «полевыми записями», свое дело он знает и выполняет хорошо, в связи с чем этот его альбом вполне можно рекомендовать к прослушиванию. Конечно же, тем людям, которые любят слушать звуки окружающего мира, наслаждаясь этой «органической музыкой» и, может быть, открывать для себя что-то новое в привычных вещах.
