Bela Emerson

Bela Emerson

A cellist for over 20 years, Bela Emerson has been performing since 1993 in various jazz, avant-garde, rock, dance, and crossover pop projects. In addition to her solo work, she has collaborated with Stomp, British Sea Power, Tim Exile, The LoveGods, amongst many others, and shared bills with Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra, Juana Molina, Music For One, Max Tundra, to name but a few. She also recorded four John Peel sessions for BBC Radio 1 as part of her collaboration with Lianne Hall/Pico, and collaborates widely with dancers, theatre companies, vjs, and film-makers. Combining electric cello with loops and effects, Bela Emerson strives constantly to explore the potential and extend the boundaries of the instrument’s place in contemporary music. Passionate and exciting, both musically and visually, she captivates audiences throughout the UK and Europe. Her solo performances are the stuff of legend: spontaneous, intense, and exhilarating. Using an array of electronics, pedals and effects that take the cello way beyond its usual sphere, Bela builds layers of rhythm and sound not just from strings and bow, but from every bit of the instrument. The effect, as anyone who’s heard her will testify, is mesmeric. Releases: Kissing Nettles (2003, Drama Queen), Cables (2004, Quiet Records), Scythe 7" vinyl (2005, The Slightly Off-Kilter Label)
