This album is the result of a collaboration between composers and sound artists based in Valdivia, Chile, and London, UK. It was inspired by the long-running SoundLapse project at the Universidad Austral de Chile, where recordings of the wetlands around Valdivia were used within various ecological, educational, and creative projects. Composers and artists from both cities met to discuss the SoundLapse project, and discussed ways in which we might collaborate. Recordings were subsequently made in two locations – the Valdivian wetlands and at the London Wetland Centre (LWC). Those recordings were shared among the group, and we set about making a collection of works that responded to wetland environments. There was no limit on style or aesthetic, nor any ownership of any particular recording. Instead, everyone involved in the project was free to develop their own creative response to both the recordings and the wetlands. Together, these works offer myriad perspectives on the sounds of the wetlands, and – we hope – encourage reflection on our collective responsibility for their conservation and preservation.

We are very grateful to the London Wetlands Centre, specifically Ruth Thomas and Emily Wiltshire, who were both very generous with their time and enthusiasm. We are all very grateful to Rory Salter, who provided amazing support recording. This project was supported by Global Seed Funding and Social Purpose Funding, University of the Arts, London.

An album of compositions and artworks inspired by the wetlands of Valdivia, Chile, and London, UK.
